Why this guide
Rim light can transform an ordinary wildlife encounter into an image filled with atmosphere, shape and drama. But it isn't created in editing. The light, your position, the background and your exposure all have to come together in the field first.
When photographers struggle with rim light, the problem usually isn't their settings. They see a backlit animal and start shooting before asking whether the light is truly reaching the edge, whether the background will reveal it, and whether their exposure will hold it.
In The Rim Light Field Guide, I share how I approach these moments in the field, from recognizing the right conditions and finding the best position to protect the delicate highlights.
About me
I'm a wildlife photographer and educator based in the Boreal Forest of northern Alberta, and backlight is where many of my favourite images begin, including the fox kit on the cover of this guide. My work has appeared in National Geographic España, Canadian Geographic and BBC Wildlife, and I've spent my career teaching photographers to see the light before they chase it.
