Title Morning Swans
Location Lac La Biche, Alberta, Canada
Description This photo was taken in April of 2022. Lac La Biche sites in the midst the central migratory pathway. Lac La Biche lake was first designated as a Bird Sanctuary in 1920 by the Government of Canada and became a Provincial Wildlife Sanctuary following the passing of the Alberta Natural Resources Act in 1930. It is an Important Bird Area (IBA) under the international program spearheaded by Birdlife International. Over 250 species can be found in area some migratory and some year round. It was designated an IBA because of the large number of California Gulls and Red Necked Grebes (2% of the population in North American: nest at this lake).
Trumpeter and Tundra swans migrate through the region and can be seen in early spring and late fall. The swans can usually only be found in the area for about a week in each of the aforementioned seasons. Understandably I was happy to find these swans which had to stay relatively close to the shore allowing great photos as the majority of the like still was covered in ice except for along the shore. Laying in snow on the beach I took photos of the swan in the first light of the morning when a light mist still lingered.
