Witness the Grasslands Come Alive with Burrowing Owls
Step into the vast, windswept prairies of Grasslands National Park for an unforgettable wildlife photography adventure. Few places on earth feel as timeless and untamed, and few birds capture that spirit better than the burrowing owl, charismatic, elusive, and full of character.
At sunrise and sunset, when the light is at its most magical, we’ll focus on finding and photographing these remarkable little owls. Whether perched at the mouth of their burrow, scanning the prairie with sharp golden eyes, or swooping low across the grass, each moment offers an opportunity to capture behavior and beauty few ever witness up close.
This tour isn’t just about getting the shot; it’s about learning in the field from an award-winning, internationally recognized wildlife photographer who has spent years perfecting the art of ethical, impactful wildlife photography. You’ll gain insight into fieldcraft, composition, and storytelling, ensuring that every frame you capture does more than document; it resonates.
Join me for a rare chance to sharpen your skills, immerse yourself in the serenity of the prairie, and come eye-to-eye with one of Canada’s most endearing raptors. Space is limited to ensure an intimate experience, so don’t wait, secure your spot today.

What to expect
This tour is designed for photographers who want to slow down, immerse themselves in the rhythm of the prairie, and capture the intimate world of burrowing owls.
-
Ground-Level Perspectives: Much of our time will be spent lying low on the ground, photographing the owls at eye level. This angle allows for stunning, intimate images that highlight their behaviors and connection to the landscape.
-
Low Physical Exertion: Aside from short walks across gentle terrain, the physical demands of this tour are minimal—perfect for those who prefer long, patient sessions behind the lens rather than strenuous hikes.
-
Where to Stay: The nearest accommodations are in the village of Val Marie, but options are limited. Booking early is strongly recommended. For a true prairie experience, you may also choose to camp at the Frenchman Valley Campground within the park.
-
More Than Owls: While burrowing owls are our main focus, Grasslands National Park is full of surprises. As you explore between photo sessions, you may encounter pronghorn antelope, sage grouse, coyotes, or even a curious badger crossing your path.
Expect golden light, wide-open skies, and the kind of stillness that makes every wildlife encounter feel extraordinary.

Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrive in the area by 4 PM. We will meet at 7 PM for our first evening excursion looking for owls.
Day 2 & 3- We will meet before sunrise to get the owls when they are most active in the early morning. With luck, we may also spot owlets this time of year. Spend the day reviewing photos or touring around the park, and we will regroup in the early evening, looking for owls once more.
Day 4 - One last sunrise trip looking for owls before the tour ends.

What will the weather be like?
- It will be warm this time of year. During the day, the temperatures can reach as high as 30 °C, but mornings may still be cool around 6 - 14C. There is always the possibility of rain so bring rain gear with you.
- An updated forecast will be provided closer to the actual date of the tour.
What should you bring?
- Clothes that can be layered and hiking boots.
- Plenty of batteries.
- You want a lens with reach to give owls the space they need. Ideally, you should have a lens with a reach of at least 500mm, if not longer.
