I awoke that morning to large, heavy snowflakes and knew exactly where I was going. A pair of great grey owls had been spending time in the area and were nesting somewhere in the surrounding forest. I was content to leave the nest undisturbed and enjoy watching the adults when they came out to hunt.
As soon as I saw the snow, I knew the image I wanted to create. I hoped to find one of the pair against the darkness of the forest, standing quietly as the storm moved around it. Eventually, there it was—the owl facing the elements, a sentinel in the storm.
