I get intense motion sickness, so being on a whale-watching boat with a camera is always a challenge. On this trip, thankfully, I did well. We were off the coast of Homer, Alaska, surrounded by at least nine humpback whales.
I never managed to time a breach, but I became drawn to the quieter moment, the mist from each whale’s breath rising against the dark mountains. For a few seconds, it seemed suspended between the ocean and the sky: a breath between worlds.
