Description This photo was taken in September of 2022. It was elk rutting season and the valley near J-asper houses the Athabasca river. The elk cross the river frequently sometimes finding a shallow place to cross and at other times swimming across the river. As a photographer I have in my mind a bucket list of photos I am trying to capture when in the field. On this trip I specifically wanted a landscape photo with an elk in the river with the mountains in the background and reflecting on the river. I climbed down to the river as I could hear the males bugling close by and waited. Although a large bull elk did not make his way across this smaller male did giving me all the elements of the photo I had planned.
